Where's Fawlty?
So, it's that time of the World Cup. Semi-finals ahead, starting tomorrow and, hey, look: four European teams. That means it's time for that good old-fashioned sport of bringing up national stereotypes.The Germans, usually rather polite and definitely not up to (or down to) the level of the Sun and News of the World, are leaping ahead with an article describing the Italians as being "lazy and greasy, among other things". Apparently the Der Spiegel web site, where the article appeared, pulled it fairly soon after but the Italians are protesting.
Rather than the article itself, the reactions to it are also worth noting. The Italian captain responded saying he was shocked but his shock seemed to be more about where the article was printed.
"It shocks me that this can happen in a civilised country like Germany".
So, does that mean he wouldn't have been surprised if the comments had been made in some other (uncivilised) country?

it would appear that uncivilized countries can report any trash they see fit...wonder if that means the u.s. is uncivilized with all that tripe in the enquirer?!

H&F? what and where is it? final is on sunday though; I may have to work
H&F = Harp and Fiddle in Bethesda. It's right by where you and S used to work and has a very casual atmosphere with a huge screen to watch the matches on. It's good fun since it's not pretentious or weird if you (i.e. me) go by yourself.
